long-time hawaii senator daniel inouye, who died yesterday. we've got all that news ahead. >>> but we begin tonight with something that is an important story in its own terms. but for those of us at msnbc and nbc news, it is also an incredibly emotional thing. and i can tell you, it ends with good news. it ends with this news, which i can say personally was greeted by all of us as the best news in the world when we saw it. it's nbc's chief foreign correspondent richard engel, looking a little disheveled, a little less groomed than usual, but as you can see, looking like himself. on the left this is ghazi balkiz and john klooister, a long-time nbc news photographer. these three men were able to appear live on the "today" show, fife days after being kidnapped and held in captivity in syria. just hours before this shot of them this morning, they were freed by a syrian rebel group who rescued them from an unknown group that had taken them and that had held them for five, long, horrible days. the rebel group not only rescued these three, they then took responsibility for driving them to th

in hawaii where the president is spending the christmas holiday. brianna, the president maybe a little too optimistic that a deal can be reached? aloha, by the way. >> he did say last night that he is a hopeless optimist that something can get done, but what we know, it's not going to be that big package, obviously of deficit reduction as well as dealing with these tax hikes that are set to kick in. that's not what's going to be happening, instead, he's pressing for something smaller just to a deal with stopping those tax hikes from kicking in for americans making $250,000 per year or less. and also trying to make sure that unemployment benefits are extended. listen to what president obama said last night and also listen to what some of the house republican resistance from speaker boehner to his sort of short-term plan here. >> in the next few days, i've asked leaders of congress to work towards a package that prevents a tax hike on middle class americans, protects unemployment insurance for 2 million americans, and lays the groundwork for further work on both growth and deficit reduction.

in hawaii and, yes, christmas brings us one day closer to possibly the fiscal cliff, the huge tax increases, spending cuts that could take effect in one week or so. brianna keeler is watching there in hawaii, joining us with the update. first of all, how is the president, how is the first family spending the holiday? >> presumably right now they are sleeping in, suzanne, because it is still very early here as you know. >> what time is it? >> we are expecting of course they'll have a christmas. let's see. 6:00 in the morning bright and early. we've been at it for a few hours. we expect them to have a nice christmas meal at the house they're renting. the white house chef is here. maybe we'll get details on what they are going to eat. there is nothing on the president's public schedule. he is frequently gone and visiting with troops in the past so we wouldn't be surprised if he did that again today. i will tell you that bo the dog is actually along for the ride here in hawaii and the white house released a video where bo just really kind of steals the show. let's look at a little of that. this

's. there has been a loss here in the senate. the senator from the hawaii, daniel inouye at 88 years old passed away yesterday. that will likely cause interruption for a few days for memorial services next couple weeks. whether for the president and most members of congress to go to hawaii or for the late senator to lie in state at the capitol, all things would cut up more time, meaning in all likelihood, if they find an agreement that could be considered real they would have to give themselves a little bit of overtime and pass one of the legislative vehicles that essentially stops the clock to take it into new year's. that was not the plan. that is why they put together what was called sequester so they would be forced to put a legislative gun to their heads to make a deal. looks like they may give themselves a little bit of after school study time. bill: we'll see how that pays off. carl cameron leading our coverage. thank you, sir. martha: the bottom line really does this deal begin to address the economic problems that exist in this country? stuart varney, the anchor of "varney & company" o

in history, daniel inouye died yesterday. he has represented hawaii in congress ever since it became a state back in 1959. he spent almost 50 years in the senate serving as chairman of the powerful appropriations committee and the senate's president pro-tem making him third in line for succession to the presidency. president obama praised the world war ii veteran and medal of honor recipient calling inouye a true american hero. he lost his arm fighting the germans in 1945. harry reid remembered his colleague yesterday on the senate floor. >> i have never known anyone like dan inouye, no one else has. the kindness and -- that he has shown me during my time here in the senate has been something i will cherish always. a man who has lived and breathed the senate. if there were ever a patriot, dan inouye was that patriot. >> daniel inouye's staff said his final world was aloha. he is survived by his wife, son and granddaughter. he was 88 years old. >>> republican congressman tim scott will be switching chambers next year becoming the first african-american u.s. senator from the state of south car

-bye to hawaii senator daniel inouye. there's a special memorial service. the senate chaplain will deliver a sermon and you see president obama wiping tears from his eyes. he was the second longest serving senator in history. he served hawaii since 1959. that's where president obama grew up so he's well familiar with daniel inouye. he was awarded medal of honor after losing an arm in world war ii. it was at a hospital in recovery that he met bob dole. senator inouye was 88 years old. . it has a tropical connection, because it's coming from the direction of hawaii, but still a mid and northern latitude situation. seattle and portland seeing some rain, snow at the higher elevations. if anything is a saving grace, it's a little cooler this go-around, so some of the moisture getting locked up in higher elevations in the form of snow. most of that is well north of san francisco and napa valley. this will sink further south, we'll get another piece of energy later on today that will spin up across the bay area and intensify the rainfall. that's what we will be watching closely. our computer models highlight that. one pulse to the north. another one fills in further to the south. it shouldn't be nearly what we saw last week. the ground is saturated. rivers are swollen. it won't take much to get more in the way of flooding. once we get past that, we are looking at a fairly dry scenario going over the next few days. today is the day. then tomorrow we'll hopefully be breathing a sigh of relief. >>> this morning intense fighting in syria outside the city of aleppo. rebel
